The total allowable thickness for RUBBER and SPONGE is 4.0mm according to ITTF Rules.
Depending on the thickness of the top rubber sheet, the sponge can vary accordingly. Often you will see sponge listed as 0x, 1.3mm. 1.5mm, 1.8mm, 2.0mm, and Max. All of these sponge thicknesses when added to the top rubber sheet should be less than or equal to 4.0mm.
If you measure a rubber sheet that is 1.75mm, then Max thickness for the corresponding sponge would be 2.25mm to allow for a total of 4mm. If the rubber thickness was 1.9mm then Max thickness would be 2.1mm. If you play sanctioned events and use illegal glue or booster, be advised that the max sponge may increase in thickness and you could exceed the 4.0mm and your paddle would be deemed illegal for tournament play.
