Max is the thickest sponge a manufacturer is allowed to create when added to the rubber top sheet which must be no greater than 4mm. For example, if the rubber top sheet is 1.7mm thick then the Max sponge would be 2.3mm. If the rubber top sheet was 1.4mm thick then the Max sponge thickness would be 2.6mm. Each top sheet can vary so many brands will list Max as a way to help the playre get to the limit of 4 mms combined.
