ITTF rules allow for the combined rubber and sponge to be 4.0mm. Depending on the thickness of the rubber (top sheet), max sponge will be 4.0mm minus (-) the rubber sheet. For example, if the rubber sheet is 1.5mm then max sponge would be 2.5mm. If the rubber sheet is 1.2mm then max sponge could be 2.8mm. Please be aware in sanctioned tournament umpires will often check the thickness of a racket and if you boost or add extra glue you could exceed the 4.0mm limit.
