ITTF Rules allow for Rubber Sheets (the sponge and rubber combined) to be a maximum of 4.0mm thickness. Each rubber manufacturer determines which sponge thicknesses works best with their rubber top sheet. These thicknesses often range from 1.0mm to 2.3mm. Many brands also carry a Max sponge thickness which is 4.0mm minus the thickness of the top sheet. The thinner the top rubber sheet the thicker the sponge can be.
Paddle Palace Pro Tip - Be careful when gluing or regluing Max sponge in sanctioned tournament play as the overall thickness could exceed the allowable (4.0mm) limit.
